Short answer
Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the work of preparing your content so that interfaces which answer a question directly, rather than listing links, can use it. Those interfaces include featured answer boxes and question boxes in search results, voice assistants, AI summaries and chat assistants. The core of AEO is simple: know which question your customer is asking, give the answer on your page in one clear, short sentence, and keep the page trustworthy and easy to crawl. No answer engine promises to cite you. AEO raises the likelihood and guarantees nothing.
The boundaries between AEO, GEO and SEO are disputed in the industry. Some practitioners treat AEO and GEO as the same thing, some define AEO as a narrower field, and others see all three as a natural extension of SEO. There is no single correct definition. rabbitclip's position is this: all three rest on the same foundation, and AEO is the face of that work which gives a direct answer to a question.
Below you will find what an answer engine is, what AEO aims at and what it does not, which businesses need it and when, where to begin, and the mistakes we see most often.
What does answer engine mean?
An answer engine is any interface that responds to a question with an answer instead of a list of links. It is a description of behaviour rather than one product. Ask the same question in different places and you may see a short paragraph in a box, hear a phone read out a reply, or get two or three sentences from a chat assistant.
What these interfaces share is that they take the answer from somewhere. That place might be a web page, a business profile, a glossary or a forum. The interface chooses where the answer comes from, not you. AEO tries to make your own page a reasonable candidate in that choice.
- Featured answer boxes and question boxes in search results
- Voice assistants on phones and smart speakers
- AI summaries shown above search results
- Chat assistants that answer in conversation
What does AEO aim at, and what does it not?
The aim of AEO is that the information on your page can be lifted into an answer. For that you build a structure in which the question is asked plainly, the answer follows immediately in a short sentence that stands on its own, and the detail comes afterwards. It is also a good structure for the human reader, who finds what they came for in the first paragraph.
AEO is not a promise of ranking. You do not decide which page appears in an answer box for a given question, and platforms change that over time. So writing a target such as 'we will be the first answer' is a mistake; the right target is that the page becomes suitable to be an answer.
Nor is AEO a promise of clicks. When the answer is shown directly, the visitor may never reach your site. That is the honest cost of this work: being named and leaving an impression of trust sometimes replaces the click. We look at what that means in our piece on zero-click searches.
How do AEO, SEO and GEO relate?
All three come back to the same question: when someone looks for something, is your page useful, trustworthy and findable? SEO asks it through rankings, GEO through being cited in AI answers, and AEO through interfaces that answer a question directly. The borders are blurred, and each sector draws them a little differently.
In practice the same work serves all three. A clear question heading with a short answer beneath it, a sound heading structure, a clean technical base and a visible author or company identity help everywhere. We map the three terms in a separate piece; here it is enough to say that AEO does not require a new site, it requires reorganising existing content around questions.
Which businesses need AEO, and when?
AEO makes sense for businesses whose customers ask questions before they buy. If you work in a field where people ask how a service works, how long it takes, what it depends on or who it suits, writing those answers clearly matters to the reader and to the answer engine alike. A clinic, a law firm, a flooring manufacturer, a software service or a training provider are typical examples.
Timing matters too. If the basics of your site are not in place, meaning crawlability, speed and a sound page structure, it is early to move to AEO. Lay that foundation first. Once it is solid and the customer questions are known, AEO can begin with a small, measurable step.
Where do you begin with AEO?
The best start is to collect the questions customers actually ask, from sales conversations, support records and on-site search. Often ten or fifteen of these carry most of the value. For each one you write a single page or page section: the question becomes the heading, and the answer sits directly beneath it in two or three sentences.
Then the page is tidied. The answer sentence is built like a definition, the detail follows, and a list or table is used where it helps. The text is divided under headings that make sense even without reading the body. The detail of writing a quotable answer is covered in our piece on quotable content.
The last step is to make the page look like a real person or organisation stands behind it: author, date, contact details, sources. You can review the on-page basics once with our free on-page SEO audit.
- Collect customer questions from sales and support records
- Write a heading and a short answer directly beneath it for each question
- Build the answer as a definition, then give the detail
- Make the author, date and sources visible
- Review each month which questions are answered and what is still missing
What mistakes are common in AEO?
The most common mistake is producing separate content for answer engines. Text written for a machine rather than a reader shows at once: paragraphs full of question patterns, repetitive and short of information. Neither answer engines nor readers like it. The page should serve the human reader first.
The second mistake is promising a guarantee. A claim such as 'you will be the first answer in three months' sells something nobody controls. The third is adding structured data that does not match the visible content; marking up a question and answer that is not on screen gives no benefit and can cause trouble.
When is AEO unnecessary or the wrong choice?
If your customers do not ask questions when they decide, and move by direct shopping or by liking how something looks, AEO is not the first priority. Brand awareness, product photography or local visibility will do more work there. A brand new site with no content yet should write its basic pages first.
A team with a very limited budget should also avoid treating AEO as a rewrite of the whole site. A few questions answered well are worth more than a hundred answered halfway. Starting small and measuring is always the healthier route.
AEO is not a new trick but the systematic application of an old principle: know the question, write the answer plainly, and be trustworthy and crawlable. Starting from the acceptance that answer engines choose their own sources, and that the outcome cannot be guaranteed, removes the wrong expectations at the outset. As a first step, list the ten questions your customers ask most often. In a discovery call with rabbitclip we can go through that list together.
FAQ
Are AEO and answer engine optimisation the same thing?
Yes. AEO is the abbreviation of answer engine optimisation, which the Turkish term cevap motoru optimizasyonu translates directly. Both describe the same work.
Will I appear first in the answer box if I do AEO?
That cannot be guaranteed. The answer engine chooses which source to use, and that choice changes over time. AEO makes your page a suitable candidate and promises no result.
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. The two rest on the same foundation and complement each other. AEO on its own does little without a crawlable, trustworthy site.
Do I need a separate site or separate content for AEO?
No. Giving existing content question headings and writing the answer short and plain is usually a sufficient start.
How long does AEO take to show results?
Giving a fixed period would not be honest. Answer engines re-evaluate pages at different intervals. Working to a monthly rhythm and watching progress is the sensible approach.
