UTM parameter
Short definition
A UTM parameter is a tag added to a link that tells analytics tools where a visit came from.
It is made up of standard fields such as source, medium and campaign, added to the end of a link; tools such as Google Analytics read these tags to attribute traffic correctly. A link in an email newsletter and a link in a social post that both lead to the same page can otherwise look identical.
Without a consistent naming convention, UTMs turn messy fast; the same campaign tagged with different spellings splits reporting and hides real performance. Teams usually keep a UTM naming sheet for this reason.
UTM tracks the click; tracking the conversion needs a separate setup, namely conversion tracking. Used together, they show which source actually drove a sale.
Why it matters
Without UTMs, which channel, post or email drove traffic is mostly guesswork. Splitting a marketing budget correctly across channels depends on this. Without that tagging, budget can easily be pulled from a channel that is working and pushed toward one that is not.
