Email automation

Short definition

Email automation sends pre-written emails automatically, triggered by a specific action or a set time.

When a trigger happens, such as a sign-up, a purchase or an abandoned cart, a pre-designed email sequence kicks in; welcome series, cart reminders and post-purchase follow-ups are the most common examples. Each email in the sequence is timed against the one before it and spread across the days that follow the trigger.

Combined with audience segmentation, automation sends a different sequence to each group; it earns a higher open and click rate than a one-off bulk email because the message fits the moment. Once set up, it keeps running without manual input, which saves real time for a small team.

Bulk sender rules from major providers such as Gmail and Yahoo require a permissioned, clean sending list; automations that ignore these rules land in the spam folder rather than the inbox.

Why it matters

Email automation gets the right message out at the right time without manually tracking every stage. It is a low-cost tool for cutting cart abandonment and encouraging repeat purchases. Needing little upkeep once it is running makes it especially valuable for a small team.
