AI search

Entity

Short definition

An entity is the way a search engine or an AI model recognises a brand, person or place as one single, consistent identity.

A search engine tries to recognise a brand not just as a string of words but as a single entity built from its name, address, social profiles, reviews and mentions across other sites. The more consistent that picture is, the more trustworthy the brand looks.

If the same brand appears under a different name, a different address, or conflicting details across platforms, a search engine can struggle to confirm they all belong to the same entity. That uncertainty makes correct recognition harder in both classic search and AI-generated answers.

Entity consistency is often confused with backlink count, but it measures something different. A brand with plenty of links can still count as a fragmented entity to a search engine if its name, category or address is written differently across platforms, since what matters is not link volume but these basic facts matching exactly everywhere.

Why it matters

An inconsistent entity picture directly affects how trustworthy a brand looks, both in SEO and in AI answers. Consistency is the basic step that makes clear who a brand actually is online.

Illustrative example

A spa chain unified three slightly different spellings of its name used across platforms, and started being recognised more accurately when an AI assistant was asked to compare brands.
