Virtual POS
Short definition
A virtual POS is the software infrastructure that lets a website accept payment by credit or debit card.
It is the online equivalent of a physical card machine; card details are processed on the bank's or payment provider's secure page, not on the website itself. That separation means the site never sees card data directly, which makes compliance with security standards easier. At checkout, the shopper is usually either redirected to that page or sees it embedded within the site.
A business can take a virtual POS directly from a bank, or use a payment provider that bundles several banks' virtual POS options into one integration. The second route offers instalments and international card support through a single setup. Relying on a single bank alone can lead to declined payments from customers holding a card that bank does not support.
3D Secure sits inside the virtual POS flow and verifies the cardholder's identity through their bank.
Why it matters
Choice of virtual POS directly shapes checkout speed, which cards are accepted and the commission rate charged. Getting it wrong turns payment into a friction point that raises cart abandonment. When choosing a provider, the rate of failed transactions matters just as much as a low commission.
