Short definition
A prompt is the written instruction given to an AI model that shapes the direction, tone and format of its answer.
A prompt is the input text written to a language model, it sets what the model produces, in what tone, and in what format. The same question can produce wildly different quality answers depending on the prompt.
A good prompt states context, audience, what to avoid, and the expected format clearly. A vague prompt leads the model towards a generic, surface-level answer.
Prompt writing is not a one-off setting, it is an ongoing practice refined through trial and correction, and for a business, reusable prompt templates build consistency over time.
A prompt is often mistaken for a search query, though typing a few keywords into a search box is enough there, whereas a prompt missing context, purpose or format leaves the model guessing. The most common mistake is writing a single keyword-like line and expecting a detailed result; a prompt should instead be built like a short task brief.
Why it matters
The same AI tool can produce a genuinely useful draft with a well-built prompt, or a flat, generic one with a careless prompt. Prompt quality directly decides how much value comes out of the tool.
