Performance Max

Short definition

Performance Max is a campaign type that automatically serves adverts across all of Google's ad networks from a single campaign.

It runs across search, display, YouTube, Gmail and Google Maps inventory from one campaign, with machine learning deciding which advert appears where. The advertiser supplies text, image and video assets and the algorithm assembles them. That reach lets a small team cover a wide range of surfaces without building a separate campaign for each one.

Compared with traditional campaigns, channel-level control is limited; instead, the advertiser sets a goal such as target ROAS or target cost per acquisition and the system adjusts bids to match it. Without solid conversion tracking, it has little to learn from. Feed quality matters just as much as conversion data; missing or inaccurate product information leads the algorithm into the wrong matches.

Negative keyword and audience exclusion options are more restricted than in a standard search campaign, which is why keeping brand search in a separate campaign remains common practice.

Why it matters

Performance Max lets a small team reach a wide inventory from a single campaign; but with weak conversion data, the algorithm learns from the wrong signals and spends the budget inefficiently. Getting conversion tracking and the product feed right before switching it on is worth the extra care.

Illustrative example

A generator manufacturer switched on Performance Max after fixing its product feed and conversion tracking; within a month, cost per click fell below that of its traditional search campaign.
