AI assistant
Short definition
An AI assistant is an automated helper, working through chat, email or a panel, that answers customer questions or handles tasks.
An AI assistant connects a large language model to business processes, taking over repetitive tasks such as customer support, booking enquiries or drafting content, the chat box on a website is its most visible form.
When it works well, it answers common questions instantly and frees the team from simple requests, but it needs to hand off to a person the moment price, stock or a legal point requires certainty.
An assistant without clearly drawn boundaries risks hallucinating on a topic it does not know, which is why what it can answer, and where it must escalate to a human, needs to be defined explicitly.
An AI assistant is often confused with an old-fashioned, rule-based chatbot; a rule-based bot only responds to preset buttons and keywords, whilst an AI assistant tries to understand any freely phrased sentence. Telling them apart in practice is simple: ask an unusual question that is not on the menu, a rule-based bot loops or falls silent, an AI assistant will still attempt an answer.
Why it matters
An AI assistant set up with the right boundaries gives customers a first answer even outside working hours and frees the team from repetitive questions. One left without limits can damage trust by simply getting things wrong.
Illustrative example
A virtual POS provider set up its assistant to hand payment issues straight to the support team, never allowing it to guess on technical matters.
