Short definition
Quotability is a sentence's ability to be lifted out of its context and dropped directly into an AI-generated answer while still making sense.
When an AI model builds an answer from a page, it usually pulls out one specific sentence and places it into the summary. A sentence buried in the middle of a long paragraph, depending on the one before it, may not get picked up cleanly, but a plain definition sentence can be lifted as it is.
Quotable writing tends to start with short, direct sentences, answer a question head-on, and avoid unnecessary connecting clauses. This overlaps with the logic behind classic SEO's featured snippet, but it matters even more for AI-generated answers.
The most common mistake is opening the answer to a question with marketing language or a general lead-in and burying the actual definition in the second or third sentence. The right approach is to put the direct answer in the first sentence and save detail and nuance for what follows.
Why it matters
Content that is not written quotably may never appear in an AI answer, however thoroughly it covers the subject. A plain definition sentence directly improves a page's odds of being chosen as the source.
