AI Overviews
Short definition
AI Overviews are the AI-generated summary answers Google shows at the top of search results, drawn together from several sources.
When a question is typed in, Google can show a short summary blended from several sources before the classic list of ten links. This summary usually stitches together sentences from a handful of sites and links to them as sources underneath.
Being cited inside an AI Overview does not map neatly onto ranking high in the classic list below it. Clear definition sentences, current information and structured data all raise the odds of a page being pulled into that summary.
Google Search Console does not yet offer a separate report for AI Overviews, so visibility has to be read indirectly. When a page ranks well for a query but its click-through rate drops unexpectedly, that pattern usually signals a summary answer sitting between the searcher and the site for that query.
Why it matters
On searches where an AI Overview appears, a visitor can get their answer without clicking through to any site at all. Being cited as a source there is one of the few ways to recover some visibility despite that lost click.

A flooring manufacturer got cited as a source in the AI Overview answer for 'how to choose industrial flooring', and trust in the brand rose as a result, even without every visitor clicking through.
