ChatGPT Checkout Withdrawn: UCP and Your Online Store
ChatGPT withdrew in-chat checkout while Google's UCP protocol grows. What it means for your store's product data, feed and own checkout page.

Short answer
Checkout inside ChatGPT has been withdrawn, but that does not mean your products will stop being sold through assistants. According to Modern Retail's report of 27 March 2026, OpenAI is pulling back Instant Checkout: the purchase moves to the merchant's own checkout experience, while ChatGPT concentrates on product discovery. Over the same period Google's open Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is expanding. For an online store, today's work is clean product data and a sound checkout page of its own.
On 29 September 2025 OpenAI had announced Instant Checkout under the name Buy it in ChatGPT, together with the Agentic Commerce Protocol built with Stripe. Etsy was the first seller and Shopify merchants were said to be coming. In under a year the idea of shopping inside the conversation was both born and stepped back from.
Below you will find why the checkout was withdrawn, what UCP is, what a store should prioritise today, the mistakes made most often and who can safely skip this preparation.
Why was checkout inside ChatGPT withdrawn?
In a blog post dated 24 March, OpenAI said that the initial version of Instant Checkout did not offer the level of flexibility it aspires to provide. Modern Retail reported the withdrawal on the basis of a story in The Information. We do not know whether OpenAI gave any other reason, so we rest only on that sentence.
Retail supplied a more concrete reading. According to Modern Retail, Daniel Danker of Walmart said that products sold inside the chat converted at a rate three times lower than those clicked out to the retailer's own site. Retailers also want to keep the customer relationship. The same report says the Instacart and Lowe's apps send people to their own sites to pay, and Etsy receives referral traffic from ChatGPT.
What is the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)?
The ucp.dev site presents UCP as the common language for platforms, agents and businesses. The protocol runs from discovery through payment and what follows, it is licensed under Apache 2.0 and it has an open GitHub repository. For shopping, the co-developers listed include Google, Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target, Walmart, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Salesforce and Stripe. For lodging the names include Amadeus, Booking.com, Expedia Group, Hilton and Marriott, and for food DoorDash, Square, Toast and Uber Eats. A draft specification for lodging is published, and the page says the food part is coming soon.
According to Google Merchant's UCP page, the protocol enables agent actions in AI Mode in Google Search and in Gemini, with direct purchase coming first. It uses existing Merchant Center shopping feeds. Embedded checkout is open only to approved merchants, and the default route is the merchant's own checkout. The page gives no date, and we do not know when it will be available in any particular country.
What should an online store do today?
Both developments point the same way: an assistant finds and recommends the product, and the purchase is mostly completed in the merchant's own checkout. Two things therefore stand out. The assistant must understand your product correctly, and the customer must be able to pay on your site without friction.
On the product data side, name, description, price, stock status and images need to be consistent everywhere. On the checkout side, your own page has to be fast, secure and comfortable on mobile. You can check the markup on your product pages with our structured data audit and the loading time of your checkout flow with our site speed tool.
- Keep product name, description, price and stock identical across your site, feed and marketplaces
- Fill in structured data on product pages completely and correctly
- Update your Merchant Center feed regularly and clear its error warnings
- Speed up your own checkout page and reduce the number of steps
How should assistants be thought of as a discovery channel?
The picture Modern Retail reports shows assistants being used, for now, for product discovery. Etsy receiving referral traffic from ChatGPT is one example. It is sensible to treat an assistant as a new shop window, but the place where the sale closes is still your own site.
Be ready to measure the visitors this channel sends. Separate in your analytics which page they land on and from which source. We do not know which assistant will open payment in which form tomorrow; if measurement is in place, you will have data when you decide.
What mistakes do online stores often make?
The most common mistake is reading headlines and rebuilding the infrastructure from scratch. Replacing a working checkout page because payment was withdrawn or because UCP arrived is needless risk. The second is keeping product data tidy for one channel only, for example only for a marketplace.
The third is letting price and stock drift apart between the feed and the site. An assistant shows one price, the customer sees another on the site, and trust is lost at once.
- Rewriting a working checkout flow because of a news story
- Keeping product data tidy for a single channel only
- Price and stock drifting apart between feed and site
- Leaving campaign and return terms hidden on the page
When is this preparation unnecessary or the wrong choice?
If you sell only from a physical shop or take orders by telephone and have no online sales plan, this subject does not concern you for now. If you have very few products and your customers know you directly, feed work would be heavy for what it returns.
There is one wrong choice as well: commissioning custom software to implement UCP or another protocol. Google's page says existing Merchant Center feeds are used, so that feed has to be clean first. Embedded checkout is open only to approved merchants anyway.
In short, checkout inside ChatGPT was withdrawn, Google is widening agent shopping through UCP, and in both the purchase mostly stays on the merchant's own checkout page. The sound move today is not to build a new protocol but to clean your product data, keep your feed current and speed up your checkout page. FAQ
Can I buy products directly from ChatGPT?
According to Modern Retail's report of 27 March 2026, OpenAI is pulling back Instant Checkout and the purchase moves to the merchant's own checkout experience. ChatGPT concentrates on product discovery. For the current position, see OpenAI's own announcements.
Can UCP be used by online stores in Turkey?
We do not know. Google Merchant's UCP page gives neither a date nor a list of countries. According to the page, the protocol uses existing Merchant Center feeds, so keeping your feed clean helps in any case.
Do I need custom software for UCP?
The sources show no such requirement. According to Google, the default route is the merchant's own checkout and embedded checkout is open only to approved merchants. Fixing product data and the feed first makes sense.
Should I change my checkout page?
Do not change it because of a headline. Speeding up and simplifying a working checkout flow is enough. Large retailers that want to keep the customer relationship are also seen choosing their own checkout.
