Keyword
Short definition
A keyword is the word or phrase a person types into a search engine, and it tells the engine what a page is actually about.
Keyword research uncovers the exact wording a buyer uses, which phrases have lighter competition, and which searches sit closest to an actual purchase decision. Sites rarely target a single word; they target a phrase, such as 'warehouse flooring cost' rather than just 'flooring'.
Long-tail phrases, three or four words strung together, get searched less often but usually bring less competition and a higher rate of conversion. Keyword choice shapes a page's title, its headings and its internal links; pick it at random and a site attracts visitors, just not the right ones.
The most common mistake is stuffing the chosen keyword into a page word for word, over and over; it makes the text harder to read and looks unnatural to a search engine as well. The right approach is to cover the topic that keyword points to fully, using related terms and synonyms, because search engines now judge a page on the whole subject rather than one exact phrase.
Why it matters
A page built around the wrong keyword can pull plenty of visitors and still sell nothing. Choosing well means understanding the intent behind a search before looking at its volume.
Illustrative example
A workwear manufacturer shifted from 'wholesale workwear' to 'corporate uniform bulk order' and saw less traffic overall, but more enquiry forms landing in the inbox.
